Car seats can be installed using either the LATCH system or the vehicle seat belt, depending on your vehicle year, make, and model, as well as the car seat model. The best option is whichever method provides the most secure fit in line with both your vehicle owner’s manual and car seat instruction manual.
A car seat should be installed using only one system at a time unless your instruction manual specifically states otherwise.
What Is LATCH?
LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) is a system built into most vehicles that allows a car seat to be installed without using the vehicle seat belt.
It uses built-in lower anchor points in the vehicle and connectors on the car seat to secure the installation.
Weight Limits for LATCH Use
LATCH use is limited by weight. The system can only be used up to the weight limits listed in your vehicle owner’s manual and your car seat instruction manual.
Once your child and car seat exceed the allowable limit, the installation must be switched to the vehicle seat belt. Always follow the lower of the two limits listed in your manuals.
What Is Vehicle Seat Belt Installation?
The vehicle seat belt is an alternative method for securing a car seat. Unlike LATCH, the seat belt does not have lower anchor weight restrictions and can be used when LATCH limits have been reached.
A properly installed car seat using the seat belt is just as safe as LATCH when installed correctly.
Top Tether Use
For forward-facing car seats, the top tether should always be used when available, regardless of whether installation is completed using LATCH or the vehicle seat belt. The top tether helps reduce forward movement of the car seat in a crash.
How to Choose the Correct Method
Use the installation method that allows the most secure fit in your vehicle.
- Check both your vehicle owner’s manual and car seat instruction manual.
- Confirm LATCH availability and weight limits for your seating position.
- Use the vehicle seat belt if LATCH limits have been reached or if it provides a more secure installation.
- Install using either LATCH or the vehicle seat belt, not both at the same time.
- Ensure the car seat moves less than 1 inch side to side or front to back when tested at the belt path.
