As your child grows, they will eventually transition from one car seat mode to the next. Moving too soon or waiting too long can affect how well the car seat protects your child. Always follow the height, weight, fit, and usage requirements for your specific car seat before changing modes.
Every car seat model is designed with specific limits for each mode of use. Refer to your car seat labels and instruction manual for the requirements that apply to your model.
Rear-Facing to Forward-Facing
Children should remain rear-facing until they reach the maximum rear-facing height, weight, or fit limits specified for their car seat.
Once any rear-facing limit has been reached, and your child meets the requirements for forward-facing use, the seat may be transitioned to forward-facing mode if applicable.
For more information, see Rear-Facing vs. Forward-Facing Requirements (Harnessed Seats).
Forward-Facing Harness to Booster Mode
Children should remain in a forward-facing harness until they reach the maximum harness limits for their car seat.
Do not transition to booster mode before your child has outgrown the harness requirements.
For more information, see Booster Seat Requirements.
Multi-Mode Car Seats
Some Baby Trend car seats are designed to transition through multiple stages of use, such as rear-facing, forward-facing, harnessed booster, high-back booster, or backless booster.
Each transition has its own requirements and must be completed according to the instruction manual for your specific model.
For more information about how these systems work, see Using Multi-Mode Car Seats (Hybrid, Convertible, Combination Systems).
Before Changing Modes
Before transitioning your child to the next mode, confirm that:
- Your child has reached the appropriate height, weight, fit, or usage limits for the current mode.
- The next mode is approved for your child's size and stage of development.
- The car seat is reconfigured according to the instruction manual.
- The car seat is installed correctly for the new mode, if installation requirements change.
